Create a bootable Mac OS X Lion Install USB stick

Lion is finally here, at least for the developers. So, how to install it on different machines without download 4GB for each installation? I think I found a good solution that allows you to download Lion just once and move it around where and when you need it.

First of all, download Lion from the Mac AppStore. It will go in your /Applications directory. Once the download is completed, do not install Lion yet. Instead, right-click it and select Show Package Content. Surf the directories, until you find the InstallESD.dmg file in the SharedSupport directory.

Now, launch Disk Utility and plug your destination disk to your Mac. Select the name of the external HD or USB stick and click on Restore. Select the InstallESD.dmg as source and drag the volume of the partition of your external HD or USB stick in Destination. Now, click on the Restore button.

Once done, you will have a bootable support and you can install Lion wherever you need it.
